ПРЕДИСЛОВИЕ
Родился Маршалл Д. Салинз в 1930 г. в Чикаго, где и прошло его детство. Университетское антропологическое образование Салинз получил в Мичиганском университете (в Анн-Арборе). После окончания университетского курса он продолжил обучение здесь в аспирантуре, однако закончил ее в Колумбийском университете, где в 1954 г. защитил докторскую диссертацию. Затем Салинз преподавал культурную антропологию в Колумбийском и Мичиганском университетах, проводил полевые антропологические исследования на Фиджи, в Новой Гвинее и Турции. С 1973 г. работает в Чикагском университете. Хотя 1997 г. Салинз официально ушел на пенсию, он продолжает активную исследовательскую и преподавальскую деятельность на Кафедре антропологии этого университета.
