When she emerged, the delicious aroma of fluffy, plump omelettes and fresh brewed coffee was seeping through the cabin. The first rays of sunlight slanting through her oval window had turned Paul’s head to gold as he leaned back to stretch his arms above his head. To her amazement Fiona found herself wondering what it would be like to wake up in bed with him beside her. Edging past him again she tried not to look at his tanned and muscular bare arms.
‘Better (лучше)?’ he asked her gently (мягко спросил он).
She blushed and nodded (она покраснела и кивнула), feeling a funny sort of warmth (чувствуя странного рода тепло) knowing he knew what she’d been doing (зная, что он знал, что она делала).

Breakfast was served (принесли завтрак: «завтрак был подан») during which Paul revealed that he was a graphic designer (в течение которго Пол рассказал, что он – графический дизайнер; to reveal – открывать, разоблачать; обнаруживать, показывать) who ran his own company (который управлял своей собственной компанией; to run – бегать; руководить, управлять; вести /дела, предприятие и т. Fiona was impressed (Фиона была впечатлена). By the time he was finishing a tiny bowl of grapefruit segments with a cherry on top [31]) she was yearning to impress him in return

‘Do you like swimming (вы любите плавать)?’ she asked impulsively (импульсивно спросила она).
‘A little (немного),’ he replied with moderate enthusiasm (ответил он с умеренным энтузиазмом).
‘I am a good swimmer (я хороший пловец),’ Fiona prattled on (щебетала дальше Фиона). ‘Keeps me in shape (/плавание/ держит меня в форме). Because you’ll never guess what I do for a living

‘Surprise me (удивите меня),’ he suggested (предложил он).
‘I skate (я катаюсь на коньках),’ she told him proudly (гордо сказала ему она). ‘I’m something of a whiz on ice I do exhibitions (я делаю выступления), solo and with my team (сольно и с моей командой). And I teach it too

‘Sounds great (звучит здорово)…’
‘Needless to say I’m always jogging long distances (не говоря уже о том, что я все время бегаю трусцой на длинные дистанции) to keep my legs strong (чтобы мои ноги были сильными: «чтобы держать мои ноги сильными»),’ continued Fiona (продолжала Фиона). ‘Gavin Morgan (Гэвин Морган) – the chap I was going to marry (парень, за которого я собиралась замуж) – he was a keen jogger (он был заядлым бегуном трусцой). That’s how we met (так мы и познакомились; to meet). And you, Paul (а вы, Пол)… You seem a sporty type yourself You’ve got a good body

She giggled (она хихикнула) and then caught herself (и затем одернула себя: «поймала себя»; to catch), aware that she was getting carried away (осознавая, что ее уносит) and about to look very silly (и скоро она будет выглядеть очень глупо). But Paul didn’t seem to be listening
He was staring out through her window (он уставился в ее окно; to stare – пристально глядеть, вглядываться, уставиться).

‘I do believe we’ve begun our descent into Heathrow (судя по всему, мы начинаем спуск к Хитроу),’ he commented (заметил он), whereupon to her dismay he pulled out a book (после чего к ее ужасу он достал книгу) and buried himself in it (и по уши ушел в нее: «закопал себя в ней»). He’d shut her out without any warning (он отгородился от нее без всякого предупреждения), and it felt terrible (и это было ужасное чувство; to feel – чувствовать, ощущать). There had been something so solid and trustworthy about him (в нем было что-то такое надежное и заслуживающее доверия) and then (а потом)…

As the stewardess collected their breakfast trays Fiona glanced out to where Paul had been looking Hundreds of little lights gleamed up from Heathrow (сотни маленьких огоньков сверкали в Хитроу) through the dull, rain streaked sky (сквозь мрачное, залитое дождем небо). Of course (конечно)! She knew the answer (она знала ответ; to know). Someone was down there waiting for him At last he had remembered What a fool she’d made of herself For heaven’s sake (ради всего святого), he’d only been trying to cheer her up (он просто пытался ее взбодрить)!

It was over (все было кончено). They were back to reality (они вернулись к реальности) with a bump similar to the one the plane had just made touching down (с толчком, похожим на тот, что только что совершил самолет, коснувшись земли).
It was over. They were back to reality with a bump similar to the one the plane had just made touching down.
No sooner had the 737 stopped (как только /Боинг/ 737 остановился) than Fiona jumped to her feet (Фиона вскочила на ноги), eager to leave before Paul began any awkward farewells (желая уйти прежде, чем Пол начал неловкие прощания; eager – страстно желающий, жаждущий). With a mumbled “bye” (пробормотав «пока») she turned her back (она повернулась спиной) just as he looked up in surprise (как раз когда он поднял глаза с удивлением). She half heard him make some conciliatory remark (она едва расслышала, как он сделал какое-то утешительное замечание) but by then she was stumbling away from him (но к тому времени она уже спотыкаясь удалялась от него) in her haste to be gone (торопясь поскорее уйти).

Everything was a blur behind unshed tears (все было размыто за навернувшимися слезами; unshed – непролитый, unshed tears – невыплаканные слезы; to shed /tears, blood/ – проливать, лить /слезы, кровь/), the smiling stewardess (улыбающаяся стюардесса), the arrivals hall (зал прилетов), her luggage on the carousel (ее багаж на транспортере). Just as well, perhaps No doubt in time Paul would have turned out just like the others (без сомнения со временем Пол оказался бы таким же, как остальные), despite the fact that for a few fleeting moments (несмотря на то, что на несколько коротких мгновений; fleet – быстрый; быстроходный, скорый; стремительный; to fleet – быстро двигаться; торопиться, спешить) there had been something about him that had promised otherwise (было в нем что-то, что обещало обратное).

Almost out of the terminal building (почти выйдя из здания терминала), Fiona paused (Фиона остановилась). She longed to know what his girlfriend or wife looked like (она очень хотела узнать, как выглядела его девушка или жена; to long – сильно хотеть, страстно желать). At least she’d have a picture of the happy couple to carry away in her heart Fiona retraced her steps (Фиона вернулась назад: «вернулась по своим следам»; to retrace – проходить обратно по пройденному пути; step – шаг; след) and stood behind a pillar to watch (и остановилась за колонной посмотреть; to stand).
